The areas surrounding Washington D.C. offer wonderful fall views and fun fall activities, making autumn the best time to take a road trip from the city. Whether you’re searching for a quick girl’s trip or a romantic couples escape, there’s something for everyone in the mid-Atlantic region. Check out these four awesome fall road trips from Washington D.C. to start planning your next autumn getaway.
Fall is an amazing time to visit Philadelphia. With a variety of street festivals throughout the city, in addition to the beautiful foliage to enjoy just outside of Philly, Pennsylvania is a great choice for Washingtonians looking for a quick getaway. Enjoy everything fall has to offer at Linvilla Orchards in Media, where you can pick apples and pumpkins and take in a fun fall hay ride. In September, you can have a blast in the city at South Street Oktoberfest or head to Manayunk for the Harvest Fest in Pretzel Park. And October brings the Philly Cheesesteak and Food Fest.
This charming town, which is less than 50 miles from D.C., will offer everything you need for a romantic getaway from the city. Stay at the Red Fox Inn & Taverns, a historic property enjoyed by the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Jackie O. The area is also home to some amazing wineries, including Boxwood Estates and Greenhill Vineyards. If you’re searching for something a little stronger, head over to Mt. Defiance Distillery, where they brew everything from cider to absinthe. For a little adventure during your trip, take a spooky moonlight zipline tour through the area’s treetops, courtesy of Empower Adventures.
Monticello Wine Trail
Known as the birthplace of American wine, the Monticello wine trail is a group of 33 wineries inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s vision of winemaking and grape growing. In addition to the trail’s historic significance, each vineyard also offers lovely autumn views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. The trail, which surrounds Charlottesville, is about 100 miles from the city, making it a great weekend getaway option. Check out Veritas Vineyard and Winery, a beautiful winery operated by a father and daughter team, and King Family Vineyards, which makes delicious wines inspired by Southern France.
Deep Creek Lake, MD
To truly enjoy fall in the DC area, you need to head outside. What better place to enjoy the fall weather and beautiful autumn colors than at Maryland’s largest freshwater lake? Take a hike through Swallow Falls State Park to view the state’s highest free-falling waterfall or head to Coopers Rock for rock climbing, bouldering and rappelling. Water lovers can take in the autumn views by kayaking the lake or enjoy a more thrilling adventure on the rapids in the Youghiogheny River.
Where Am I Going?
I am looking forward to my first trip to NYC (as an adult) to visit my boyfriend’s expecting sister and her husband! They are close to Central Park so I am hoping to ride in a horse drawn carriage and marvel at the fall foliage. In addition, I am excited to visit Philadelphia to check out the Cheesesteak Festival among other fall activities!
