We’ve all been there. Waking up groggy in the morning, having slept past our alarm and zombie-walking our way to the coffee machine most likely happens more than any of us care to admit. One of the issues here is not only that you feel groggy for the rest of the day, but that your morning is wasted. A morning is a powerful thing in the right hands. In fact, even night owls could learn to ensure it’s the most favored part of their day.
It only takes a little discipline to do so. Heading to bed at a reasonable time, sleeping well and waking up early, perhaps earlier than anyone else, can give you a real head start for the day. But what should you do with this extra time? Sit around and play on your phone? Or could there be better uses of your time, uses that will ensure each day is filled with comfort and relaxation? Let’s dive into the possibilities.
Taking the time each morning to plan your day can help you in many ways. First, it helps confirm to yourself the flow of your day, something that will become internally understood. This can help set your sense of timing for each task of the day, helping you optimize your efforts each hour. Scheduling also helps you determine the tasks of higher and lower priority, allowing you to get the most important issues taken care of when riding from the energy burst of your long sleep.
For people with hectic schedules, a little fine tuning could take place here. It might be you chisel out twenty minutes to work on your book, or you find an hour to workout between responsibilities. Without a steadfast plan always guided by your responsibilities for the day, you’ll either instinctally fall back on wasting time or not placing forth as much effort as you might have previously enjoyed in this space. It all depends on your level of preparation.
For some, simply planning for the day can reduce the mental work necessary to keep everything in mind. When you have an app or planner that details your day, you have a safety blanket to fall back on, and ensure everything takes place correctly. Then, the following morning, you can reflect on what went right in your day, if you had to remain flexible, or if you failed to complete the most important tasks you had. There should not be deep self-criticism to be found here, only methods to help you have a better day the next time, and to learn something.
Your finances are just as important to manage as your time. This means that spending ten or fifteen minutes each morning considering your financial situation can be worthwhile. Tracking the weeks spending so far, considering your biggest and important purchases, and perhaps saving what you can will all be conducted here. You might familiarize yourself with new overdraft banking terms, associate yourself with a lending club, or perhaps even track the financial mishaps of the previous year to learn from.
Our financial situations will never improve by themselves, unless we are lucky to enjoy multiple means of passive income. This means tailoring your growth will take deliberate effort, and the slow understanding of what parameters could be used to help you gain more stability. You may find yourself planning for your future home in these moments, or even establishing a small nest egg for your children to receive once they come of age. We often say that the long term perspective is the best to consider, but in the daily rush to get every task completed, we can often forget to schedule time to do this. With this extra time in the morning, you will be able to manage this need appropriately, and you’ll surely feel and notice the results.
Meditation and Quietness
Meditation helps people limit the mental stress they might feel before a big day of tasks, and focus on their environment only for a period of time. Taking the time to absorb our environment and to follow our breath can melt anxiety, help us begin to focus on the day ahead, and allow us to train our concentration. This can help before a big day, perhaps before a large working responsibility such as public speaking. However, even on the small days it can help. Many people feel that they haven’t ‘woken up’ until they’ve put one or two coffees into their system.
Meditation is a natural method of stimulating yourself without the coffee bean. You will likely come from your practice refreshed, in a good mood, and with a clear thinking mind. Meditation can be completed at night, but often the morning is best, as the energy of the morning is there to support you, and the restful sleep you’ve enjoyed will have also served as a form of mental clearout. This way, you can begin to pursue your day with an important self-maintenance task already completed in the morning.
Similar to meditation, embarking on a gratefulness practice can help you orient yourself into your life and improve your mood each day. Simple mentally listing the things you’re grateful for – your children, your spouse, your job, your home – will help you see that maybe things aren’t so bad. Furthermore, if you have time, reading can help you spark your linguistic centres each morning. Perhap a chapter here to help inspire your creativity could help you kickstart the logical competence in your brain, and help you feel a small sense of escapism that morning. Some people may feel that’s an unhealthy habit to partake in, but often giving yourself this moment can help you indulge in a little pleasure, and feel fully rested before you start your day. A chapter likely never hurt anyone.
