As December comes to a close, many of us are all starting to think about the twelve months in front to us. You’ll consider the different goals that you have, and you’ll begin to think about what you might like to do to differently. And it can be exciting. Because the idea of a new year and a new year is always such a good thing. After all, who doesn’t love a fresh start? However, sometimes, when you’re setting resolutions for yourself in this way, you only ever set yourself up for failure.
So, what can you do instead? Well, first of all, you’re going to want to avoid making these resolutions as you may just be preparing to fail! So let go of the idea of committing to things that are too big. And instead, here are five things that you can do to start the new year off in a better way.
Get Into The Right Frame Of Mind
To start with, you need to be in a positive frame of mind. Don’t stress that you’re not where you want to be in life. Don’t force yourself into things. It is okay to tell people no. Instead, make sure that you are feeling fresh and exciting for a brand new year and all of the wonderful things you can do with it.
Make Healthy Additions
Now, it’s natural for a lot of us to want to take away things when the new year comes around. But cutting out bad habits don’t always work. So instead of focusing on what you don’t want to do, try to focus on what you DO want to do. Drink more water, eat more fruits and vegetables, enjoy more exercise. Add in healthy ideas, to make you feel better.
Be Kind To Yourself
It’s also a good idea to try and be a little bit kinder to yourself. Because if you’re always putting too much pressure on yourself or you’re indulging in negative self-talk, then this is going to hurt you. Instead, you’ll want to make sure that you’re kind to yourself. That you’re positive. But also, learn to be a realistic optimist so that you’re not setting yourself up to fall.
Be More Present
Make sure that you’re being more present and living in the moment more. Don’t get wrapped up in your mind or online (yup, all those hours scrolling on IG envying influencers). Instead, just make sure that you’re being intentional with your time and how you live.
Act, Don’t Plan
Now, something that will often harm us when we’re setting new year’s resolutions, or wanting to change in general, is that we overthink. We think and think and think about what we want to do, what we want to achieve, and we plan. We plan things out to the tee. But then we fail. Why? Because we’re thinking and expecting too much instead of actually doing. So, if you want to make sure that you’re starting the new year off in the right way, take action – don’t just think about doing it.
