Everyone knows that Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of Summer. Bring on basking in the sun at the beach, glamping, drive-in movies and family Barbecues. Personally, I spend my summer doing as many things involving water as much as I can which cause for a lot of road trips outside of the city. If you have any upcoming road trips, consider these tips to help conserve your gas a little longer and save a bit of cash.
CLEAR THE JUNK IN YOUR TRUNK
This is specifically for my moms, fashionistas, and mini hoarders, we like to have everything just incase. If it isn’t essential, remove the extra five pair of shoes, clothes and Winter blankets! Driving around with a full trunk load decreases the fuel economy (burning more gas)
FILL UP ON THE RIGHT DAYS
If possible fill your tank in the middle of the week instead of the weekend especially Sundays. Wednesdays and Thursdays appears to be the best days to fill-up for the cheapest price, and pay with cash !
PARK IN THE SHADE
Parking in the sun makes the car hot and can cause the oil in your tank to evaporate especially if you’re parking in the sun everyday. If it’s for short trips to the supermarket or here and there, you’re cool, but be mindful. Find a shady spot as much as possible.
AVOID WAITING & DRIVE THRU’S
Sitting in the drive thru at McDonald’s can be eating your gas up! According to Green Action Centre, every 10 minutes of idling is costing you between 1/10 and 4/10’s of a liter of fuel. If you have to sit in your car longer than 30 seconds turn it off! Sitting 10-20 minutes with your engine on, your car wasted enough gas to drive more than 4 miles. Did you just think of all the gas you have been wasting ? I know, SMH. Obviously, you can’t do this at red lights or in traffic, but go inside the fast food places and turn your car off if waiting for someone.
JOIN GAS REWARD MEMBERSHIPS
In my area, grocery stores such as Giant and Safeway have partnerships with Shell and Sunoco. Every time you shop, simply scan your membership card and you’re racking up point$. No lie, last week I had 30 cents off per gallon !
